What will you do to keep fit as the snow fades to spring? Now is the time. Don't lose the aerobic fitness and muscles you've built up skiing to mush. Make a plan. Choose a sport, a gym, or a fitness routine or a little of each.
Bicycling and in-line skating ar excellent cross-over sports, using similar muscles groups to skiing. Trail running, jogging on hiking trails, is also an excellent choice. It causes you to pick your way and the placement of your feet, similar to picking a path down a mountain. Just be sure if you choose this sport, you get fitted for the right kind of footwear.
If motivation for a new sport is a challenge, commit to an event and work toward it. I don't care for jogging. There's no reason why I can't turn my daily walk with my dog into a daily jog. So, I'm signing up for some road races with co-workers to get me motivated. If I know I have to run three miles next to my friends a month from now....well, I'd better get moving now.
Make a plan that works for you. Choose things you like or goals you can attain. If you are not a morning person and you hate the gym, don't expect you are going to sign up meet a trainer at the gym at 6 am daily and stick with it.
My goals are this:
*Choose 2-3 fun runs of at least a couple miles and sign up and go.
*Upgrade walking the dog to jogging at least twice a week.
*Bicycle to work once a week (excused if there is a thunder storm)
*Pilates every 2-3 days.
* Spend as much time outdoors doing active things I like as possible.
What's your plan?
