American Women are making a strong showing in the 2010 Olympics. In the first three freestyle and alpine events, Team USA has claimed 5 of 9 medals.
The Women's Freestyle Moguls started off the week on Saturday. New Hampshire native, Hannah Kearney, made an impressive run claiming her first Olympic gold. Canadian favorite Jennifer Heil took silver, while an exuberant Shannon Bahrke clinched bronze.
Americans Michelle Roark and Heather McPhee made the final round of the mogul competiton. They finished 17th and 18th respectively.
Perhaps no other American entered this Olympics with as much media buzz as Lindsey Vonn. She graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and was favored to win. Two days before opening ceremonies Vonn announced she was injured and her status for competition was day to day. Weather was on her side, delaying the first race.
Women's Downhill competition was rescheduled. The extra days were the healing time Vonn needed. She proved her spot as America's golden girl. Finishing less than a minute behind her for silver was teammate Julia Mancuso. Austria's Elisabeth Goergl took bronze. Californian Stacey Cook finished 11th.
Day two of women's Alpine was the Combined competition. Mancuso was solid, finishing again in second place. She becomes the first American female to have 3 Olympic medals. Maria Reisch of Germany was first and Anja Paerson of Sweden third. American Leanne Smith was 21st. Lindsey Vonn caught a tip on a gate, losing her ski and a chance to medal for day two.
Team USA is having perhaps the best Olympics for their women's team ever. The days ahead are sure to bring more excitement for a fantastic field of competitors.
